End mills are a type of milling cutter. An end mill is different from a standard drill bit in terms of its geometry, manufacturing and its applications. In the case of a drill bit, it cuts only in an axial direction. In the case of a milling bit, however, it is generally able to cut in any direction, though cutting axially is not possible for some. End mills are used in milling applications such as profile milling, tracer milling, face milling, and plunging.

End mills are sold in both imperial and metric shank and cutting diameters. In the United States, metric end mills are readily available, though they are not used widely in machine shops; the case is similar in Canada. In Australia, Asia and Europe, metric diameters are standard.
