T-slot nuts are generally used in combination with a T-shaped track known as a T-slot. The T-slot nut can slide along the track and be fixed into place with a T-slot bolt. T-slot tracks can be set into workbenches or work piece-holding tables and are often used for benches holding machinery like routers, drill presses or band saws. T-slot tracks and nuts are used to prevent threaded studs damaging workbenches. They may also be used for structural framing.
